6 Steps To Getting An Insurance license
6 steps to getting an insurance license. There are a lot of people who have the idea that obtaining a license to sell insurance is way beyond their ability. The truth is, anyone can get an insurance license if they follow a few simple, common sense, steps. First, you need to determine what kind of license you want to obtain, a life, health, auto, or home. (For the purpose of this article I will focus on life and health, since that is what I have.) Second, you need to determine if you want to be a captive or independent agent. A captive agent works for one company and can only sell the products that the company offers. An independent agent can sell for any company they are appointed with. Third, usually a captive agent will be trained by the company where an independent agent will have to obtain their own training to obtain a license. Fourth, if you want to become an independent agent, (which will allow you to offer more products), you will need to locate someone who teaches you the basics of insurance. Usually, you can find information on your state insurance commission website. These courses last about a week, and cost around $200-300. Fifth, you will have to take your states insurance exam. There is a fee for the exam and it will vary from state to state. Lastly, once you have obtained your license you will be able to contact companies inquiring about being appointed to their products. Once your name and insurance identification number is entered in your state's website, you will normally get offers from different brokers wanting you to sell for them. It is not hard to find a company that needs agents. I get calls and letters all the time simply because brokers will look on my state's website and get my information and then contact me. You will not have any problem getting appointed with someone I can assure you. Thanks for taking the time to read my article, and if you want some more information about setting up your own agency online after you get licensed, there is a link in my bio box.
