Upholding orders of the district consumer forum, the UT State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed the Life Insurance Corporation of India to pay Rs. 1 lakh as insurance claim to a widow who was earlier denied the claim.

The complainant, Sharda Devi, said that her husband Faqir Singh, a retired Army officer, purchased a life insurance policy in 1995 for a sum of Rs. 1 lakh.

He expired in 1996 suffering a heart attack, but Devi’s claim was rejected by the company on the grounds that the deceased had concealed material facts regarding his health at the time of taking the policy.

Subsequently, she moved the district consumer forum, which ruled that there was deficiency in service on the part of the LIC and directed the company to pay the claim amount along with 10 per cent interest. Aggrieved by the order, the company had filed an appeal with the commission, which was dismissed on Thursday.

The commission ruled that there is nothing on record to prove that the deceased had been discharged prematurely from the Army. It also added that Singh had been medically examined by qualified doctors, who did not detect any serious ailment.
